How We Begin Counseling Services

San Marcos Counseling Services Laurie Musick, LPC-SWhen we first talk on the phone, I’ll get some information from you and I’ll send you the new patient paperwork. Complete the paperwork and bring it in to your first counseling appointment.  During your first visit, we will talk about your concerns and go over some rules of counseling. By the end of the first session we will have an idea of what we will be working on, and we will begin that in the next session.
If you are bringing in your child, I like to see the parent and child together for about half the session and then see the child separately for the last half of the session. After the first counseling session the child will have sessions without the parent. I encourage parents to keep me updated on important things going on with their children via email or phone calls. If we need to talk about something important then I’ll ask you to join us during the counseling session.

Children don’t talk about their problems the way adults do. They don’t know how to explain what they feel. Playing and Play Therapy is a way for me to see kids in a natural state. I have lots of toys in my office and we will try different things until I can see what types of feelings and themes they are working out, and then we can do some things to work on those issues.

It’s not just for kids. Adults do amazing things when they open themselves up to trying something like this. It’s a box of sand and lots of miniature figures that represent almost everything in our world. Creating something in the sand is like giving your voice a break from choosing words and hearing them. Sometimes I will give you a suggestion of what do and sometimes you will lead. The result is a visual representation of the inside of your psyche.

Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.”   C. G. Jung

Supervision

I am also a board certified supervisor for LPC interns that are collecting hours toward their license. We will meet according to the rules of the board, usually once a week and will last for at least 18 months.  This is not the same as traditional therapy. We will discuss your needs as they relate to your work experience instead of your personal needs.
I’m always open to a consult to see if we are the right fit for each other before committing to anything.
